Mexico seems to be getting a pretty bad rep these days. There’s a lot of questions about safety, drugs, cartels, and so forth. Yes, there are places you should probably be aware of. Though you should always be careful when you travel, I believe that Cozumel is definitely a town that should stay on your radar.
My husband and i took one of our first trips together here. After that, it became a favorite. It is a popular place for cruise ships to stop off at. I’m all for cruising, but if you are staying on the island, you will seriously feel the change in the community after the ships leave. Like the whole place takes a breath and returns to normal.
To get to Cozumel, you can fly right in. Coming from our home, we stop off in Dallas then hop down. Otherwise, you can fly in to Cancun and take a bus down to Playa del Carmen. The buses are very nice and air conditioned and should only cost you about 8-10 dollars.
Our first time here we stayed at a very cute, boutique hotel (about $99/ni) with amazing owners. Location was set back but in the downtown area, so it was quiet at night. There are a lot of smaller nice hotels nestled in the area. You are bound to meet amazing people. There are also some all inclusive hotels on the northern side of the island.
You can rent a car for the day; that is what we did. There really didn’t seem to be a need to rent it for the entire time. We worked our way, beach to beach, around the island. It was amazing. Everyone was helpful and friendly. The drinks were much better than downtown! Snorkeling was excellent.
Cozumel has great rocky beaches. However, if you are wanting some soft sand, you can take the ferry across the way to Playa del Carmen. (Do be a bit more careful on this side.) The ferry takes ~45 minutes and will cost you about $15 one way. You can get a rental or take a tour bus down to Tulum if you want to go further. Personally, I would take my time in Tulum and get a separate hotel there!
One of my favorite day trips we took was a catamaran tour. They only took 14 people on board which was great. I really appreciate not getting packed in with a ton of people. The ride was smooth, drinks were great. The first mate caught a barracuda that we had for lunch. They were so sweet and made sure all of their guests had everything they could want. Believe me when I say that you need to have this reserved early!
So yes, dare I say, you should go to Cozumel!
